I just got out from under Jake Huitt’s car. I have stuff in my mouth and I have no idea what it is or where it came from.

I’m helping him replace the Thermostat Housing, thermostat housing inlet and thermostat in his 1.6L Nissan Sentra. I have maybe 4” of room to work from any direction in that engine bay.

Transverse 4cyls in compact cars suck to work on

I think 4 inches is generous.

But seriously, it’s really tight in there.

Yep. And the hoses that go in to the block , under the intake manifold, between the middle cylinders, with stupid hose clamps that face up to the intake, it’s fucking stupid.

that’s why we tended to do all engine work on our lemons car (1986 prelude 2.0si) with the engine out of the car. it didn’t add THAT much time to the job.

I doubt it would add more than 2 hours if done at the beginning. I’m 3/4 done now.

yeah, the trick is knowing up front that it’s going to be the winning move. also, lemons cars don’t usually have to be usable on monday morning so pulling the engine out is usually followed by putting it on a stand and working on it over the course of several evenings, or weekends or something.

I won’t need my car for 3 months. But when I do, I need it to run. I get my licence at the end of September. Then I need a reliable daily.

plenty of time to do a full engine out refresh. it adds hours, not months.

I only have a few hours a week to work on it. :(

And I’m mostly done now. Once I get a new car, I’m gonna do that and make it a Lemons car.
